My very sincere congratulations to Liz Truss on her victory in the Conservative leadership election. She fought a great campaign, articulating key Conservative principles while keeping the focus on the issues that matter to voters of all stripes: cutting the cost of living, strengthening security on our streets and at our borders, and boosting economic growth over the long term. I admire her energy and her resolute determination to meet the great challenges we face at this time.
I also thought Rishi Sunak acquitted himself with honour in this campaign. He is a decent, principled and hugely capable politician and I very much hope he is able to serve our country again in the future.
