I had the pleasure yesterday of a visit to Langford Lakes, where a partnership between Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, which owns the land, and Wessex Water has delivered what is apparently the most efficient sewage treatment works in the UK - an artificial lake, full of reeds. Rather than treating sewage in a hideous smelly concrete installation, or worse still discharging it untreated into the river, the reed bed quickly, cheaply efficiently and beautifully breaks down the bacteria in the sewage and produces clean water that flows into the river beyond the lake. This is a huge part of the answer to the sewage problems we have. The video explains the benefits and how it works.
